LANGUAGE OF PERSUASION IN BILINGUAL ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION

Nikitichev I.G.

LANGUAGE OF PERSUASION IN BILINGUAL ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION

Abstract. The paper attempts to analyze the speech behavior of a bilingual in academic communication which is determined by the choice of linguistic units aimed at persuasion. The bilingual’s word choice in the study is explained in accordance with the speech techniques of evidentiary argumentation. The study of bilinguals’ speech behavior is aimed at highlighting the linguistic means of speech influence which are used in the transmission of scientific knowledge in the genre of scientific article. It is shown that the verbal component of bilinguals’ academic communication is determined not only by nominative units of scientific style but also by intensive conscious use of expressive lexico-grammatical structures as auxiliary means of realizing speech influence and facilitating the understanding of translated scientific knowledge in a foreign language. Such language techniques reflect specific features of bilinguals’ speech in academic communication. When transmitting new knowledge, a bilingual translates academic identity as belonging to the international scientific community, while preserving cultural identity in speech. The results and conclusions of the study may be of interest to specialists in the field of academic discourse.

Keywords: academic communication, bilinguals, linguistic means, persuasion, identity.

ON ORGANISING COMMUNICATION WITH ONE-YEAR-OLDS IN VIEW OF THEIR EMOTIONAL, PREVERBAL AND VERBAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the object and subject areas of the theory of speech activity (SAT) as a theory of domestic psycholinguistics. The purpose of the article is to reveal the internal potential of the SAT for its further development. Such opportunities are seen in the analysis of its objects, tools and approaches in the SAT. The analysis itself is preceded by a brief presentation of the methodology of domestic psycholinguistics, the originality of which is determined by the fact that it includes the general psychological theory of activity of A.N. Leontyev as a psychological theory. The analysis showed that growth points are in the area of the following problems of SAT. Opportunities for development are found primarily in the extension of research into the ontogeny of language beyond early childhood into middle childhood. It is advisable to expand research into the formation of the assignment of new fragments of the meaning of words throughout human life, especially during periods of professional training. The introduction of a multiple producer and recipient into the object area of psycholinguistics is of significant attractiveness. An attempt to introduce an analysis of the role of language in the process of human personality formation into the object domain of SAT can also be interpreted as promising. Psycholinguistic analysis of the subject meanings of words acquired during the teaching of secondary languages awaits its researchers. A new task for SAT is the reception of the theory of cultural conditioning of subjective experience, developed by V.I. Alexandrov. The general conclusion is that domestic psycholinguistics in the form of SAT has unrealized potential for its development.

Keywords: theory of speech activity, ontogeny of language, ethnic culture, image of the world, linguistic and subject meaning, body of the sign.

LINGUISTS’ PROFESSIONAL WORLDVIEW IN THE LIGHT OF P. BOURDIEU’S CONCEPT

LINGUISTS’ PROFESSIONAL WORLDVIEW IN THE LIGHT OF P. BOURDIEU’S CONCEPT

Abstract. The article is devoted to the linguistic views of the famous French philosopher and sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) and their significance for modern ideas concerning linguists’ professional picture of the world. The authors analyze P. Bourdieu’s publications based on the relevance of those factors that influence linguists’ professional activity, its effectiveness, a researcher’s image formation, etc. Particular attention is paid to ten theses reflected in the French thinker’s various monographs that are of specific value for the modern view of a linguist’s status, including the thesis of collective belief, struggle in the space of doxa, presumed independence of science, strategy of false rupture, competition in scientific research and its negative impact on the quality of these studies, duality of the phenomenon of scientific paradigm and a critical perception of this concept, symbolic capital of academic degrees, reproduction of the universe of belief, and a very specific character of the scientific habitus. Despite the fact that P. Bourdieu formulated these ideas in relation to the current situation in the research and academic environment of the social sciences, their importance for understanding the processes that determine the formation of a linguist’s professional worldview can hardly be overestimated. An additional argument in favor of the eurychoric characteristic of scientific discourse is Bourdieu’s keen interest in the problems of language, expressed, among other things, in his critical remarks on N. Chomsky’s concept.

TO THE FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM OF “PATHOLOGY OF LINGUISTIC PERSONALITY”

Abstract. The article presents the key provisions of the original author’s theory of pathology of linguistic personality. The author examines the phenomenon of linguistic personality pathology in its integral connection with the process of communication. Pathology in this sense is characterized as a distorted, dependent vision of the world, arising as a result of violations of the need-motivational sphere of the individual. By projecting an irrational vision onto the generated texts and presenting them to others, the pathological linguistic personality destructively influences the categorical structures of the recipients’ consciousness. The author describes the structure of a pathological linguistic personality also classifies the signs of pathogenic text.

Keywords: pathology of linguistic personality, pathogenic text, psychological volume of text, consciousness, language absorption.

NEUROPSYCHIC MECHANISMS OF DISCOURSE GENERATION AS A COMMUNICATIVE EVENT: PROLEGOMENA

N. Alefirenko, A. Alefirenko

NEUROPSYCHIC MECHANISMS OF DISCOURSE GENERATION AS A COMMUNICATIVE EVENT: PROLEGOMENA

Abstract. The problems of interaction between linguistic and neuropsychological factors of discourse formation as a pre-speech process are considered. The central concept is discourse in its cognitivist understanding. The sources of discourse genesis are defined. The neurophysiological basis of discourse generation as a communicatively significant event from the point of view of cooperation between the left and right cerebral hemispheres is substantiated. Neuropsychological mechanisms for transformation of synergetic (nonlinear) discursive thinking into linear speech activity generating statement/text are projected. It shows the dependence of linear construction of textual elements on the pre-speech factors: motive, intention (traces of all accumulated by the communicant linguistic and extralinguistic experience, preliminary assessment of the discursive situation, intents and goals of the communicative act, the intended ways of influence on the recipient), the work of discursive consciousness (frame organization of the representation of the communicative event in the frame slots, filling which is the basis of nomination). The units of internal coding are “meanings”, which represent elements of the communicative event reflected in the discursive consciousness and project such components of the utterance as subject, predicate and object. Mental mechanisms of discourse formation operate in a two-level mode. At the first level, the brain cortex searches for traces of verbal signals together with impressions of the referent images of the words selected for naming. The combined representation of sound and object images forms a structured grid of temporal relations, which serves as a substrate of inner speech. Then, at the second level of discourse formation, a new network of connections between the substrate elements of the communicative event is generated, thus forming a “verbal-semantic network”.

Keywords: discoursoporation, neuropsychic mechanisms, frame, mental lexicon, predicate actants, synergy, linearization of speechmaking.

LOTMAN AND THE SEMIOSPHERE OF PUBLIC COMMUNICATION THROUGH THE PRISM OF COGNITIVE STUDIES

LOTMAN AND THE SEMIOSPHERE OF PUBLIC COMMUNICATION THROUGH THE PRISM OF COGNITIVE STUDIES

Abstract. The article is devoted to the epistemological intersections of the ideas of Yuri Mikhailovich Lotman and modern studies of public and media communication. The author gives a brief description of Lotman’ notion of ‘semiosphere’, pays special attention to the issues of defining and characterizing semiotic boundaries as cognitive phenomena and overcoming them in modern public communication in the digital age. The conceptual apparatus of semiotic research proposed by Lotman sets the paradigm model for cognitive interpretation and the actual state and dynamics of the semiotic space of public communication, the status of semiotic boundaries and the semiosis of boundary phenomena. The productive idea of Yu. M. Lotman about the personological nature of the semiosphere allows us to consider public relations as a practical information and communication activity (a set of social practices), their substance (public communication), result (public capital) and tool (text) through the prism of an intellectual personality, as a cognitive system that stores diverse codes, transforms received messages, generates new messages and broadcasts them. The synergistic revision of PR involves updating the ideas about the ontological status and dynamics of each element of public communication through the prism of cognitive studies – the addresser (basic subject of PR), addressee (target public and its segments), channel (media), code, text and context, the result – the publicity capital of the basic subject of PR.

THE ISSUE OF A MULTIPLE COMMUNICANT

E. Tarasov

THE ISSUE OF A MULTIPLE COMMUNICANT

Abstract. The article deals with an issue of multiple producer (MP) and multiple recipient (MR) of speech messages, which is analyzes the impact of communication between producers and the impact of communication between recipients on the production and semantic perception of speech messages constructed by the MP and perceived by the MR. The research of B.F. Lomov and his colleagues revealed the influence of communication on the course of mental processes, which allows us to interpret communication as a determinant of the psyche along with activity. One can assume that the regulatives in society, fixed in speech form, are created exclusively by the MP, and their content is constructed mainly by the MR. The production and social regulations that authorize or not authorize the behavior of members of society are of great importance for the stability of society and therefore are fixed in the sign form exclusively by multiple speech producers. Speech utterances in our time are created and perceived in the regulatory sphere by multiple communicants, so the model of a communicative act must be supplemented by a multiple producer and multiple recipient.

GENERALIZATION STRATEGY AS A FACTOR OF COMMUNICATION CONFLICTOGENICITY

Abstract. The article presents the methodological foundations of the problem of conflictogenicity of communication. Communication is considered integral to joint activities. Generalization is considered as a key factor of conflictogenicity. The author proposes a fundamentally different psychological mechanism of generalization from the development of thinking and consciousness proposed by traditional psychology. Generalization in professional communication is carried out in the following sequence: from the concept, through the representation and to the sensory image and back. As an example, the strategy of speech influence by the SPIN method used by managers in large sales is considered. The leading sign of overcoming the conflict of communication is the phenomenon of common consciousness of subjects, manifested in the adoption of a common goal of joint activity.

INTRODUCTION INTO LANGUAGE CONSCIOUSNESS THEORY

E.F. Tarasov

INTRODUCTION INTO LANGUAGE CONSCIOUSNESS THEORY

The most adequate special scientific methodology to analyze the functioning of language and non-language consciousness in the speech production and perception of is the theory of activity (AT) by A.N. Leontiev, developed within the framework of the cultural and historical approach of L.S. Vygotsky. Language and non-language consciousness develops in the joint activity – verbal communication – of an adult and a child, resulting in common consciousness, which is an indispensable prerequisite for sign communication. The speech production involves verbal modeling of images of perception, images of memory and images of imagination, or linguistic signs meaning only – the so-called imageless speech. Speech, i.e. verbal modeling of consciousness is not consciousness per se, but it is the external form of consciousness of a particular ethnos members. The image of the world, a concept introduced by A.N. Leontiev is the consciousness of a member of a society who has actively appropriated the ethnic culture of his/her society. The image of the world is a system of knowledge an ethnos provides its members with and which constitutes its ethnic identity. The transmission of a verbal message is not the transmission of information, but the the speech chain content construction, which consists only of linguistic signs bodies, by the recipient. When transmitting verbal messages, the speaker produces only a chain of bodies of linguistic signs and offers it to the recipient for perception, setting the program for generating the content of this chain, which the recipient constructs from his/her own knowledge.

COMPLEMENTARY MODELS OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION

E.F. Tarasov

COMPLEMENTARY MODELS OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION
(STATING THE PROBLEM)

The article dwells upon the reasons of speech messages understanding variability in joint activities (JA). The identical understanding of speech messages is ensured by the communicants’ common consciousness based on the appropriation of the same ethnic culture, and the variability of understanding is determined by a) the uniqueness of each individual consciousness within one’s ethnos and b) the difference in motives, goals, operations, assessments of conditions among JA participants and observers.

The analysis of the reasons of speech messages understanding variability of in the JA is possible only within the triangulation approach, which involves various scientific data, different researchers, different theories and different methods.

Keywords: complimentary models, prerequisites for symbolic communication, identical communicants’ consciousness, uniqueness of an individual’s consciousness, JA structure, triangulation approach.

COMPONENTS OF THE NAITIVE PICTURE OF THE WORLD IN THE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY OF A NUMBER OF PROFESSIONS

Chuganskaya A.A.

COMPONENTS OF THE NAITIVE PICTURE OF THE WORLD
IN THE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY OF A NUMBER OF PROFESSIONS

The article deals with the concept of a picture of the world in relation to the professionalactivity of the person. Two main species stand out: the sign-based and naïve pictures of the world. Within each of the types, it is possible to highlight specific mechanisms of activity construction, goal allocation and task operationalization. The peculiarities of building reasoning on the basis of the use of a sign-based picture of the world, where the acquisition of knowledge takes place on the basis of learning concepts, building information on the basis of formally logical ties, are noted. Naïve picture of the world has other components of construction, which can include scenario behavior and the use of irrational systems of knowledge acquisition. Such areas include those professional activities that involve expert work and the use of knowledge. that is difficult to verbalize or formally describe. Finding mechanisms to identify the characteristics of such expertise is significant for further use in intelligent agent building systems as part of artificial intelligence research.

Keywords: picture of the world, professional activity, scenarios of behavior, artificial intelligence.

HYPERTEXTUALITY OF MODERN PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION

Ryabova M.

HYPERTEXTUALITY OF MODERN PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION

A surge of research interest in professional communication, internal meaning and its structural components has been observed in Russian and foreign linguistic thought since the end of the twentieth century. Whether this is the result of a certain socio-cultural situation or marks the onset of a new paradigm, it is difficult to answer unequivocally. Most likely, both options are correct. The modern communication space is radically different from the one that existed almost recently, several decades ago. The new electronic reality imposes a unique imprint on all areas of society’s activities, including professional communication. As you know, a specific conceptual system that serves the professional sphere, functionally tends to the language implementation of specially encoded information. Information technologies have led to the fact that the linear order of information structuring is replaced by a variable system of transitions between semantic units. The sequence of transitions is non-linear, fragmentary, open, interactive, and incomplete. therefore, the concept of “hypertext”becomes one of the Central categories in professional communication. The purpose of this article is to outline the hypertextuality of professional communication that actualizes it today.

HYPERTEXT IN SCIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION

Peshkova N.

HYPERTEXT IN SCIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION

The present paper proves the position of the scientific text as a hypertext performing in the situation of information perception under some new conditions of modern communication.
The article considers some specific features typical to modern communication in general and, particularly, to science and professional communication. Among them: increase of information volumes, which results in the information abundance generating sense abundance for an addressee; generation of multiple complementary information fragments belonging to the same or different fields of knowledge. This tendency results in constructing complementary models of one and the same object and generating complementary and, simultaneously, independent knowledge structures.
The universal properties typical both to the hypertext and to the scientific text are analyzed. The ontological properties of the scientific text which make possible its relating to the hypertext are: intertextuality and precedential nature resulting in its secondary nature which does not prevent it from having novelty and being original; interactivity reflecting the essence of the modern communication as simultaneous information perception and production; hierarchy structure of its content and sense; its incompleteness and open nature.
Based on the analysis of the characteristics mentioned above the conclusion is made that the scientific text as a hypertext is an effective instrument of the modern science and professional communication.

Keywords: hypertext, scientific text, information abundance, complementarity principle, intertextuality, precedential nature, secondary nature, interactivity.

UNDERSTANDING SPEECH MESSAGES AND THE PRINCIPLE OF COMPLEMENTARITY

E. Tarasov, L. Golovina

UNDERSTANDING SPEECH MESSAGES AND THE PRINCIPLE OF COMPLEMENTARITY

The purpose of the article is to form theoretical prerequisites for explaining the understanding of speech messages by communicants.

The content of a speech message is constructed from the knowledge of each recipient associated with the bodies of language signs that make up this speech message. The difference of such knowledge of recipients inevitably leads to the creation of non-identical contents of the same speech message. For theoretical understanding of the phenomenon of non-identity of content it is advisable to use the principle of complementarity N. Bohr. According to this principle, non-identical contents of the same text can be interpreted as additional models that do not contradict but complement each other.

Theoretical substantiation of additional models in the study of the problem of non-identity of the contents of speech messages can be found in the integrative-eclectic approach to the analysis of psychological phenomenology, formed by V. A. Yangus.

Keywords: speech message, complementarity principle, non-identity of the text, integrative-eclectic approach.

THE USE OF CREOLIZED TEXTS IN PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

I. Vashunina

THE USE OF CREOLIZED TEXTS IN PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

The article describes the characteristic of using creolized texts in professional activities.  There are three components of professional activity: performance by the employee of the direct professional duties, professional communication in the professional environment and professional training. There are several criteria for the use of creolized texts in professional speech activity. The first is the participation of workers in the production of creolized texts. According to this criterion, there are different professions whose representatives produce such texts themselves (for example, doctors, teachers), and professions whose representatives do not produce creolized texts (for example, transport drivers). The second criterion is perception of creolized texts in the process of work. For example, transport drivers have to “read” creolized texts in the course of work, and for writers and artists there is no such need. The third criterion is the degree of normalization of professional creolized text. There are professions whose representatives deal with template creolized texts (for example, drivers), while others work with unique texts – artists. The degree of normalization may be different. The fourth criterion is related to the modality of perception of creolized text components. They most often used are verbal-visual texts, where words are combined with the image, there are also verbal-auditory and verbal-visual-auditory.

Keywords: creolized text, professional communication, normalization of the text, modality of the perception of the text.

SEMANTIC FLUENCY TASK WITH DIFFERENT SEMANTIC CATEGORIES: FACTORS OF FULFILMENT AND THE PROBLEM OF GENERALITY OF THE SEARCH MODEL

A. Grigorjev, E. Lapteva

SEMANTIC FLUENCY TASK WITH DIFFERENT SEMANTIC CATEGORIES: FACTORS OF FULFILMENT AND THE PROBLEM OF GENERALITY OF THE SEARCH MODEL

In the article, the results of the study of the role of the psycholinguistic variables (age of word acquisition, word frequency, word imageability and object familiarity) as factors of fulfillment of semantic fluency task, in which objects belonging to a semantic category are generated during certain time, and of estimating of generality of the model of information search when this task is fulfilled, which was tested by other researchers on few categories, are presented. These results are as follows. (1) It has been shown, that more early acquired, more frequent, imageable and familiar category members are generated more often in semantic fluency task. (2) We failed to reveal contribution of psycholinguistic variables over and above the degree of category clustering into the prediction of category potency (an average number of category members generated in fulfillment of category fluency task). This result can be explained by small sample of categories, which is due to the fact that only for few categories the necessary data were available, and by strong correlation of potency and the degree of category clustering. (3) By means of analysis of individual data about numbers of generated members for each category, an evidence for generality of the model of information search when semantic fluency task is fulfilled, which has was tested on few semantic categories, has been obtained.

Keywords: semantic fluency, psycholinguistic variables, semantic categories, category norms, information search.

O THE CONSTRUCTION OF A THEORY

E. Tarasov

TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF A THEORY
OF ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLINGUISTICS

The article presents an attempt to clarify the methodological grounds for the formation of a theory of organizational psycholinguistics (TOPL), based on A.N Leontiev’s general psychological activity theory and A.A. Leontiev’s theory of speech activity. TOPL explains verbal communication in professional collectives, where interlocutors possess a similar level of professional competence and intensively use hypertexts containing actual texts and pretexts, which are kept only in a recipient’s mind, fixing working instructions, directions, orders etc. The ontology of interaction of professionals (determined by A.N Leontiev’s activity theory) is a professional cooperative activity per se, i.e. the temporal and spatial structure of reality takes the form of PCA.

TOPL forms the professional worldview, describing the obligatory knowledge of employees cooperating in a certain professional sphere. PCA has specific features: the objectives and motivations of the PSA are relatively stable, as well as professional technologies, speech communication is usually based on special precedent texts (rules, regulations, instructions), and speech actions of PCA participants include professional terminology systems. It can be assumed that the described methodology makes it possible to form a TOPL.

Keywords: organizational psycholinguistics, cooperative activity, professional collectives, professional worldview.
